Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by Mathias Wed Dec 12, 2007 4:40 pm

{I never mind the longer posts.}

Mathias, half undressed and nearly comfortable, was surprised to hear a voice chime out in the direction of the tent. He had already given up hope on hospitality in the camp of what appeared to be a ragtag group of soldiers, but it seemed like not all of them were as negligent, or foolish, as the rider who initially dismissed him.

Unwilling to layer himself deep within his furs again, he simply grabbed a pair of pelts, one wolf and one of a great white bear, and threw them about his bare shoulders, ducking out of the tent. "Haven't started yet," Mathias said with a chuckle, "so it's hardly interrupted." The cold night air raised gooseflesh on his bare arms and neck, and his gaze quickly flickered through his meager camp, assessing the situation. Her footprints meandered towards his horse, pausing and turning to the tent. His steed, still nameless, had shuffled towards her prints, and was sniffing at the snow nearby.

So it was the animal. Mathias loathed to commit the horse into another person's care, and turned back to his visitor. His brow furrowed together, an expression becoming all too common for his liking, as he noticed her pale skin, and the dusting of snow on her. She looked ill, her eyes too dark and skin much too milky white. If she was ill, he'd be best to stoke the fire, or see her to a medic. If they had medics. He shook his head.

"Need he be stabled?" Mathias asked hesitantly while he willed his muscles, taut with surprise, to soften and gesture at the steed. "Or is it another matter?" The language came clumsy to his lips and tongue, different from the language in the north, and his milk-tongue. He opened one of the many bundles beside his tent, and drew out another pair of logs. He was running low, and on the morrow he'd likely have to chop some more, and dry it. He tried not to carry too much and burden his mount: The weather alone made travel by horseback a near cruelty, but there was a certain necessity to it as well. A good rider could offer his mounts all the comforts they could, while the mount makes the journey much less dangerous for the rider. He tossed the logs onto the dying flames in his fire-pit and watched the red tongues lick up the side of them, offering a little more heat to the cold night.

Sachieal let Origin to the bed and looked toward the door, a girl with pale skin and blue hair appearing. Well, this just keeps getting better and better. Sachieal would need to get Origin something high in iron, find a way to stop her bloodloss. It was a simple fix, yes, but if it was to be done right, someone with medical knowledge would be required.

Sachieal turned to Origin, noticing that she was focusing on a spider spindling a web above her head. "Okay spider, we should leave Miss Origin alone now." He gently plucked the spider from above Origin and placed it in a new corner. It scuttled away and Sachieal turned back to the girl.

"Ma'am, I know not if you are a member of this camp, but Origin here needs healing. If you can provide her with this, then please do. I must go get her a...steak." Sachieal felt rediculous saying this out loud, but it must be done. "I shall be back in a moment." Sachieal moved towards the door. "Oh, another thing." He paused, regarding the girl again. "Don't get any ideas on harming her, I'll be back before you could lay a hurtful finger on her." He pondered. "Actually, she'd injure you before even I could get back." Sachieal turned and sprinted out the door. Luckily, it was just about time for dinner.

Origin turned her head weakly towards the door, not bothering to assess the stranger. She didn't really care at the moment.

Steak. Ick. Steak tasted like cow. She never liked the stuff, nor much meat in general, it always reminded her of biting into a muscle or some sort, which simply disgusted her. TO tell the truth, she had no real fondness for eating, she did so to survive, and nothing more.

Sachieal found the fires of soldiers cooking quickly. It really did help that he was so attuned to the element. Might have to thank good old Lou for that one. Poor bastard actually helped me for once. The fires were new, as a bonus, that'd make it easier to get a rare one.

If she wanted it cooked, Sachieal could handle that. Easily.

A few coins and a light explination later, Sachieal was sprinting his way back towards the infirmary. He hadn't been more than a half-minute out, at best, and it wouldn't be more than a moment till he would walk through the door.

"Alright, Miss Origin, how do you like your steak?"

Origin eyed the slab of meat and groaned, "Whatever it takes. I'd rather not taste the stuff."

She placed her hand on her hip, where the medic girl was finishing up the stitches and peparing a fresh bandage. it hurt something fierce.

Sachieal smiled, it looked like the situation was getting a little less tense. "Flash fried, you'll taste the burn, but not the meat itself." A fire, not of black and purple, but of red and orange, normal flame, burst forth unto the steak. It sizzled for not but a moment, then turned black and shriveled to a mere one-half its original size.

Sachieal gave it another quick burst of flame, the room smelled of burn, that'd stay a little while. I'm sure that'll annoy her to all Hell. Sachieal thought to himself, before summoning cold from his hands. The steak cooled quickly, to a bearable temperature, in not but a second. "Alright, Miss Origin, this is the best I could do." He handed the shriveled steak to her.

Sachieal smiled his biggest smile. "Just think about getting it down, that's all that matters at the moment."

For a minute or two, Vanity simply stepped back and watched Mathias attend to the fire he had made, practically observing. Her arms remained crossed, held closely to her body as to keep her fingers from numbing. This was probably a worthless act, as Vanity's skin was constantly warm, only chilling or growing hotter in drastic moments of her life. Still, it was better to be safe than sorry. She wasn't exactly dressed warmly for this kind of weather.

When she had felt she had inspected enough, Vanity blinked and tilted her head a tad, still watching Mathias intently. "Oh, no, your horse is fine," she assured him, and then turned her eyes to the steed itself. "That is what impresses me. I saw how you cared for him and it was quite sweet, very noble of you." She paused, watching the creature with an inquiring gaze. Then she took a few steps closer, letting her eyes trail about its features in an examining fashion. "Most other riders would leave their mounts with another to care for, or simply abandon them temporarily, overall."

Curiosity continued to overwhelm the girl. Carefully, she lifted one hand toward Mathias's horse, but didn't take a step forward. She would only do so if the animal indicated it was alright. Vanity remained standing, still in her straight-backed posture, one arm and her fingers outstretched. It was probably strange to see her standing still. When she did so, she seemed to become stone, a marble statue amidst the falling snow. The wind only billowed through her long, ink-black locks, only ruffled her clothing, but did not sway the girl herself.

"He is a very dependable one, I can already tell," Vanity murmured, her eyes suddenly soft and a bit eager; they seemed to be locked onto the steed's eyes, almost reassuringly. She'd rarely been around horses, though seen them plenty. Riding one had never been an option for her, either. Really, with wings, there was no need for horses in Heaven, as far as she recalled.

((I had only a bit of time, so decided to improvise and post, but will have to read these last two pages later. Also, anyone who still did not finalize their posts, do it so we can move to the following day, you will now all have a chance to get to know each other better on the jounry Wink ))

((Nemes))

“He had no right to change the ranks…”
“He is but a captain! What did the generals have to say about this?”
“Yes, well I’ve heard that back in Eslin he ran with crime lords of the underground and was wanted for countless murders…”
“… even the Eslinian General, Vasillios, wanted his hide for being Lorven’s spy… what makes you so sure he’s trustworthy?”

Nemes listened patiently to the raspy, angry protests of the colonels and officers… now left with no ranks, what with Odei’s sudden action of demoting them and replacing them with his own choice of common soldiers, without consent, nor warning. Nemes lifted his gaze to watch Odei, also there in the hall. He stood near the hearth, facing them, arms crossed before his chest as he passively regarded the angry men, not even trying to defend himself. One angry commander added another complaint, voice loud and incredulous. “He’s almost run our reserves dry! First he threatened my life then took our gold to purchase one spelled Kanjir*, and one Kama*, both for every member of our regiment! Our men are well armed! We needed that gold fo…”

Odei was in the woods with Origin explaining the route of the following journey as they walked back to camp. When he had offered her to ride Obi a second time, she retorted with a string of colorful words. Having had enough, Odei mounted Obsidian and rode off, deciding he had better things to do then put up with her moods. He marched straight into Commander Batheir’s tent, and asked for the needed gold, knowing well that wasn’t the way things were done, but cared less. He would not wait on every single committee these men held to make the discussions for the benefit of the regiment. So he used a slight bit of ‘force’ and Umbri, and got the gold.

Ahila was richer than Azrian, and he had learnt from a few local soldiers that they indeed forged and supplied their men with the special Roshaan weapons, typical of the south, and decided that his own regiment should be supplied with the same standards. So he was dragged into the hall, soon after purchasing over 180 weapons, ready to give them out to his men first thing in the morning. Nemes’s browse rose at this news, surprised at Odei’s actions. He was both angry and pleased – Angry for Odei still would not recognize him as authority. The man should have at least discussed these decisions with Nemes first. And yet he was pleased; yes, their men were well armed, but spelled Kanjir and Kamas were far more efficient than a thousand arrows against dark creatures and mages.

“I have given the Captain authority to take action as needed for the benefit of the regiment…” Nemes lied, voice cutting the angry cries of the crowd like a knife. They all felt silent, and anyone watching Odei would have seen the surprised look in his eyes. He did not expect Nemes’s support. “…And I do believe he has good reason for all his choices.” This time, his voice held a harsh edge to it, directed at the angry men; where were THEY when the Auran snuck out? Where were they when the regiment needed guidance as they arrived in Ahila? Nemes wished to recruit his best officers and men on this mission… but decided against it. The less impressive this regiment appeared, the less attention it would draw to itself from the enemies. So he had to settle with these less than capable men. Odei obviously was not ready to put up with it.

An exchange of a few words, until the officers were completely silenced, and grudgingly stormed out the hall, each eyeing the Surdan with disdain. Nemes now had the problem of dealing with Odei… he was a difficult, rebellious character… Nemes needed to gain his trust, and knew he would not be able to do so trying to break the man into submission. So without further words, Odie too left the room, and nemes could not do more but hope that no more conflict would rise between the captain and the others…

But he knew better.

*Kanjr = Sword, Kama = Dagger. Both are weapons forged of the special black iron of the Roshaan, and unlike regular steel, is deadly to dark warlocks and mages.

Histlan listened very closely to what Sachieal had to say in response to her questions. She'd meant no disrespect really, but felt like she was obliged to the answers, had he not given them, well then that in itself would have been a show of character. She heard small exchanges between some of the men and women there, not sure if they were due to her suddenly outspoken words, but in the end she cared little. If nothing else the doubt in some people was more than likely cleared up more now once Sachieal responded. He sounded sincere.

She could not be fully sure of it at the moment. However, his word, until he proved otherwise, was enough, and it'd been dutiful and certain sounding. A curve pulled on just one side of her lips and Histlan had given him a long nod of the head, something of a bow in his direction in response to his answer, from it, becoming glad she'd voiced herself.

She pulled gently on the reins, leading her stead in a semi-circle to turn it around, satisfied and no longer having any concerns she wished to address. She nudged the animal and it walked lazily back the way she'd come in an enlarged curve around the general side of the group. She came to a stop once more and brought her attention back to the group trying to pinpoint Ivaylo's ... feel, for lack of a better way of explaining. The sound of a rather loud newcomer pulled her attention from it though. Despite Sachieal's projecting voice to the crowd, this one's seemed... unneccessary at least for the time. Though truly time telling was not a great skill of hers.

He was addressed though, and then Sachieal went off on his beast of a creature, leaving the man with little of an answer to his own concerns, but another person she did not know seemed to pick up the slack.

With this 'meeting' adjourned she nudged her animal back into a calm-paced walk, in no specific hurry. Her attention went back to Ivaylo's general direction. Not wanting to shout, she hoped he was looking as she tilted her head over a bit and pushed out her chin in indication of the direction of the camp. Not sure if he'd travel with her again she kept at the same pace and brought her attention back forward towards where she was riding back to. Histlan did not want to rush but sleep would be welcomed when she did find her tent.

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by TaiKitsune Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:20 pm

After the ordeal with Origin had passed, and lord only knows, so did Sachieal's one-hundred heart attacks, Sachieal decided that the newcomer needed to be directed a bit. Sachieal meant him no ill intentions when he dismissed him, that was not in his character. However, those questions, even if he had known them, were not his to answer.

The stranger had set up camp, inside that of their camp, and for what reason the long-haired stranger decided to do so, Sachieal knew not. He'd keep an eye on the man, of course, hellfire was a cruel mistress, and Sachieal was friendly enough with the demon-flame that he'd call it to chase the man to a safe distance. That safe distance, of course, was off the edge of a cliff, or something of that sort.

Word traveled quickly of the strangers location, and with a light nod and a single question: "Where is the stranger?" Sachieal found the exact location, and was there in but a few strides. Mayhap the stranger felt somewhat at home in the large outpost? Sachieal'd just have to find out for himself.

As he made his approach, Sachieal noticed that the girl from before, the pale one in the crowd, stood straight backed as ever. Her had was extended towards the strangers horse, and Sachieal chuckled as he remembered his Pestilence, who was probably inside his ever-unused tent. Not that the demon-horse was impervious to cold, anyway, it was just a sinful creature, and it enjoyed luxury to no end.

"Stranger!" Sachieal called, "I've come to speak with you, if you would be so kind to allow me a word as to your coming here." Sachieal then turned to the girl. "And you, Madame'..." His voice trailed off for a moment. "Is it not but the slightest bit cold to be wearing such clothing?"

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by daccat Fri Dec 14, 2007 12:11 am

Having slid off his own mount to stand on the ground some time ago when the meeting had begun the dark elf merely stood at attention, absorbing the conversation as it went. Histlan, suddenly much more outspoken than he had first thought her to be, confronted their proclaimed leader with the questions he was certain others would want answered as well although they didn't wish to be the ones to ask them. Ivaylo's attention was drawn back to Sachieal as he finished off the meeting, voice with a tone of finality to it.

"You have my word."
How well he kept to his word, well, that was yet to be determined in their upcoming travels.

The meeting quite obviously came to an end at that and yet another new arrival; some soldiers chose to linger outside, others making their way towards the tents as suggested. Ivaylo looked up, feeling the sort of sensation one received when eyes were on them - only that she didn't use her eyes, but whatever sort of sense she used in place of her sight, it worked. Leading his own horse around and out of the dwindling crowd, he closed the distance, catching up to Histlan on the slowly trotting horse. Despite the short time they'd been in company he'd gotten a bit better at reading the signals she seemed to use in place of words quite often.

Not wanting Histlan to think that the silence that usually fell between them bothered him, he had stayed in her company on the mostly quiet walk to the clearing and would do so on the way back to the tents. It wasn't unnerving at all, at least not to him; he found forced small-talk to be the more unbearable option.

Ivaylo paused when they came to where the horses were to be kept for the night, patting at the animal's nose as he undid the straps that held his belongings in place. Just as the soldiers needed to remove their armor for a night of rest, a horse couldn't be left to sleep with all it's equipment still on it's back. He looked up to Histlan, not quite knowing if he ought to ask if she'd like assistance or not. She had gotten to the ground and seemed to be managing by feel and memory well enough to undo the luggage on her own. Ivaylo straightened with the packs slung over his shoulders and started towards the rows of tents, looking forward to slumping across the cot and not have to move again until daybreak.

"Have a pleasant evening, Histlan."

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by Nick Fri Dec 14, 2007 12:20 am

Quite satisfied that her signal had been received, and even more Ivaylo had chosen to join her once more, she offered him a small smile before turning her attention to the direction in which they headed once more. He seemed like a humane man from what little she knew, that and seemed to not be too stressed by her condition or behaviour which was refreshing in certain ways. Her mind was elsewhere though as she thought over some of the uncoutable possibilities thr future could have in store. She went into nothing with great detail but wondered on things that popped up and once more on reasons for things.

She felt she still had some consideration to do for tomorrow, and wondered what Ivaylo's decision would be, but still she remained silent, unsure if it would be appropriate to ask, and then her chance had quickly passed as they'd gotten back to the camp.

Dismounting her horse she rubbed her cold thighs, feeling as though they'd forgotten themselves while on the horse. After that she began unloading her steed. It took her a bit longer as her gloved hands felt their way along but she remembered the locations and types of knots from having examined them before leaving early that morning. She lifted her head as she heard Ivaylo's voice.

She smiled appreciatively and nodded. "Evening, Ivaylo. Sleep well." She waited briefly as she heard him head off and then finished her work before making her way back to her own tent, finding it with only a bit of difficulty. Pulling up her hood and taking off the sash around her eyes for the first time in what felt like too long, she curled up in her beddings with a book. She read for a little while before falling asleep with one black hand on it and the other holding her blankets close.

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Newsce10

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 3276
Early morning just before sunrise, Yeidin camp, Ahila.

Hurst was rudely woken from sleep at the loud clang of something heavy slamming the ground just a hairs’ width away from his head. He woke with a jolt, the stables and horses seeming to swim around him. He could barely open his eyes, now more like blood-red slits on his face than eyes, as he turned over on an elbow to inspect the shining heap next to him. Glistening bottles of heavenly spirits, he hoped for a moment, but no; a beautiful, long sword accompanied by a dagger. The two weapons were quite simple, unadorned save by a few foreign runes alongside the upper part of the strange, black metal of the blades. They were simple, yes, yet so beautiful he did not mind that they were not beer.

“Spelled weapons, Hurst.” He heard Odei’s – booming- voice above him… along with all the other overly loud noises that seem to echo in his head… Hurst would not see, but Odei held a great number of these powerful, yet light, weapons under an arm, which was heavily protected with leather lest should his body come in contact with the spelled weapons. “You’ll need them against Umbri and Umbrovians. Don’t lose them or go bartering them off for a pint of ale or something. Get up, we have work to do.”

He heard Odei’s footsteps walk away, followed with more clangs as he and other men gave out the new pair of weapons to other Lumerian soldiers, their officers and lastly – the captains and leaders, the umbrovians sneering and shying away at the nauseating sight of the Roshaan metal. Hurst plopped down again, snuggling the swords, and in a few seconds was loudly snoring again.

Odei gave out the last of the sword and dagger, glad to see that no one was left without a spelled weapon, and then made his way to the center of the camp followed by the new officers, including Sachieal, entering the large, main tent situated there. Though uninvited, a couple of Umbrovian captains followed, curious to see what was going on. Inside, he rolled out some blank scrolls on a table and with ink and pen drew the calligraphic symbols he would teach these men, who were then required to pass on this information to the troops they lead.

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 893733
“These are protective symbols, typical of the Roshaan Manaar, called Ka-raz, Himya and Tars, working like a shield they will disrupt the shape of an Umbri for a few moments once it comes into contact…” he explained. Drawing them made his own skin tingle, but he had grown accustomed to the sensation for the Sagan claymore he wore for decades had the very same runes carved into its blade. “These runes are not life-savers; they do nothing against a dark warlock, and a weak Umbri will cower and perhaps retreat once sensing them, but an average Umbri might be intimidated for only a few minutes before braving the runes and attacking… all in all it gives the soldier some time, which is better than nothing. But this symbol…” He drew the last one smoothly and fast, though it was complicated. “… Shefra, will kill an average Umbri and sometimes even a warlock if drawn or carved on a weapon. True our soldiers have been supplied with the spelled Kanjir and Kana this morning, which are far more efficient, but they could easily be disarmed and lose them in battle… therefore I want them to at least have the slight benefit of these runes…”

Odei was interrupted as a curious Lumerian officer asked him with surprise of where, and how, Odei possessed this knowledge, after all- he was Surdan, now everyone knew this, and this magic he was not showing them belonged to the Roshaan, and was one of the purest forms of white magic. Odei’s silver eyes met his for a moment, but did not answer, for that was a story of the past that he did his best to forget, as the memories of it still hurt to this very day. “By full sunrise, prior to the morning meal, I want all our men and women to know these symbols. They can carve them within their armor and weapons, or draw them with the paint supplied here…” he gestured towards a pile of small, glass vials provided by the kind council of Ahila. “Next, the soldiers begin packing. We travel light, and will take only their weapons and the Lettas also generously supplied by the local army.” Lettas were sleeping bags, but ones fashioned specially for the weather these people were accustomed to – though not sleeping within a tent, the soldiers will find that they are still warm, cocooned in these beds made of Orias skin.

And finally, Odei told them of their mission, and of the small group of families they are to deliver safely to Roshaan Manar, near the city of Eslin, indeed a long, long journey was ahead of them. “It is your job to set up sentries within your own company – reliable eyes guarding every side; east, west, south, north and sky within each group. We will form a protective shield around the civilians, they being at the heart of our regiment, surrounded by the Lumerian men. Umbrovian men will then form the outer walls of our regiment, as they will be able to pick up the Aura of any enemies close by. Our time of departure is noon.”

Instructions and orders as quick as they were, Odei was clear and done, dismissing the officers and captains. He looked up to find the watchful eyes of the Umbrovians listening to their conversation and his demonstration of the runes. He did not find hatred within them, but sadness. Here was an Umbrovian, teaching his ‘allies’ how to kill his own kind. But now, this was what was needed to be done, and as inner feeling conflicted, the dark allies would put away their fears and doubts, and move on for the benefit of The Balance, and the possibility of finally restoring peace in the far future to this fallen world and their broken lives.

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by Mathias Fri Dec 14, 2007 4:03 pm

Mathias watched, pleased, as his steed pressed it's muzzle into the young woman's hand. But he couldn't help but chuckle at her fascination with his care and 'sweetness'. “The Elonnahal believe that a mount and rider stand as one. One can be no better then the other. If I didn't tend to him, I would be left for dead. If he didn't carry me, he would die.” He shrugged and patted the steed's neck. “Fact of life,” he added, as though it was indeed.

He gave the fire a small kick, stirring the embers and releasing more heat. Given the young woman's lithe form, and lack of any winter clothing, she must be freezing. And the colour of her skin... Mathias couldn't tell whether or not she was pale, or frostbitten all over, which reminded him of the Elonnahal camp: The male pride, and need to provide for those around them. Which usually meant fussing over the women, children, and one another. “... Take this,” he said in a tone that offered no argument, taking the heavy fur from his shoulders, “you look much too cold for one your size and shape. Why you aren't bundled in a tent, I know not, but I won't have you freezing at my fire.” He inhaled sharply at a light breeze, and smiled at the brisk, fresh sensation of the wind on his skin.

“Stranger!”

An almost familiar voice pierced the quiet of the camp, and Mathias turned towards the sound. Ah, yes, he thought, stifling a chuckle. The rider from earlier that could answer no questions returned, and by the look of him had some questions for the 'stranger'. So he finally decided to check up on his visitor. Mathias glanced at the horse, who huffed. Might've overstayed our welcome, boy, he thought, turning back and petting his muzzle affectionately.

“I was just telling her the same,” Mathias said with a bark of laughter. “And you're the second bother I've had on my way to rest, 'stranger', so I'll be short. I was traveling, from my home weeks north of here. Rest is best shared, as is travel. I can set camp, light fires, and I know this climate better then any of your men, I'll wager. I can work my keep until I need part ways.”

And it was true, for the most part. There was more to it but he wasn't willing to admit that, should this expedition turn towards Harald's steading, he would take to the winds on his steed like only an Elonnahal could, bearing word of warning, and the tale of the Azrian battle. That would keep the steading from being caught by surprise or worse; away on a raid, or hunt.

The fire's heat was already diminishing, and he kicked the snow onto the embers, listening to them hiss. His bed-furs were calling him, and Mathias knew he wouldn't be able to resist their siren call much longer. Unceremoniously, he turned away and pulled up the flap of his low tent. “I pray that's enough for either, or both, of you. I require rest, and I'll speak to either of you further on the morrow.” He ducked into the tent, paused, and called back out the tent. “Unfortunately, if you have any more questions before morning, you'll have to find someone of a higher rank to answer them for you.”

A low rumble of laughter crept from the tent, but soon eased away into quiet snores.

Ah. Morning.

The glorious rising of that burning celestial orb, bathing the land in it's life-giving rays of yellow and orange. The snow on the ground glistened and sparkled in the new dawn, and forms in the camp began to stir, the four-legged variety nosing about for food, poking eagerly through bags in search of oats. Much akin to what a certain steed outside Mathias' tent was doing. Wandering away from the ashen ghosts of the fire's embers, the horse was nose-deep into a very foreign looking bag, with symbols and crests Mathias would be sure to recognize (OOC: For clarity he's nosing through Chi's bags, of course).

As it stood, Mathias and morning still weren't on speaking terms, when they could help it. There was a hangover, cold water involved, some hurtful things were said about someone's mother, and no one had an exit strategy for the ensuing fight.

Of course, this is what he thought most mornings, if not every morning. Even the rigorous late-to-bed-early-to-rise life of the Elonnahal hadn't changed it for him. Getting out of bed always seemed like such an unnecessary effort, and there were days he wished he had kept up with his training in Serkan magic, so he might be able to make the world come to him, rather then going to the world.

Unfortunately, rising from the fur is one of the many hardships of life, he thought sleepily, yawning and rolling over to bury his face in a soft rabbit pelt. One which I'm not going to engage in for at least another half hour.

Origin rolled over on the cot, wonderously frustrated. She had no idea how much longer she'd be bedridden, and what wonderful things she'd miss lying on the blasted cot.

She longed to hear what was going on on the outside, but no one had some to disturb her after Sachieal and that blasted piece of charcoal. She wasn't sure if she quite got enough iron. It wasn't very bloody, but it was better than nothing. She added another day of bedrest to her mental list.

With a groan she turned to watch the very uneventful door.

(Leyla and Mathilda)
"C'mon Mathy! I saw her go in here! A big pale man carried her."

Mathilda blushed, "Are you so sure she's the correct sort of friend for a young lady such as yourself? I don't suppose anyone such as that is a good role model."

Leyla ignored her fluttering nanny and continued on, entering the infirmary witha burst of tiny energy. She'd learned from the day before, and now continually kept the old woman in tow.

Origin looked up as Leyla burst into her room, dragging an older woman along with her.

"Why hello there Little One,"she croaked, lifting herself on her pillow.

She returned the condescending glare of the old nanny, and turned to speak to the small child who'd launched herself onto the bed.

"What are you doing here Leyla? This is an infirmary, no place for healthy children."

Leyla settled down near Origin's pillow, placing her small rabbit in the young woman's lap.

"I want to know how to make potions! You can teach me! Look here," she dug into her skirt pocket and pulled out a hand full of weeds and flowers, "What can I make with this?"

The nanny huffed and rolled her eyes, resigning herself to a stool in the corner of the room.

Origin spread out the plants on her lap, an reached for her satchel, "These are very nice plants, but you can't make a potion with fresh plants. These need to be hung in a cold and dry place for a while, then we can make a potion out of them, alright?"

Leyla's little face scrunched into a frown, "But I wanted to make a potion now!"

Origin gave the girl a stern look, which quieted any potential for a tantrum.

"I'll see what we can do."she said, rummaging around.

mathilda is a new shared character. She's the nanny]]

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 561741

Chi herself was actually more of a morning person when it came to waking. Although she preferred the night, usually she was up at dawn and had an occasional cat nap throughout the day if her sleep had been interrupted. Yet this time Chi was uncharacteristically out cold and would have been for at least another hour if it wasn't for a rustling noise nearby.

Groaning, Chi turned her head to the side, and got the full brunt force of the sun's rays through the door of Hurst's tent. The sun thought it was cute to knife at her eyelids; relentlessly stabbing her senses even as she tried to cover her face with her armored forearm. Another rustling sound caused the slightly hungover Chi to roll out of the small bedroll and get up rubbing her eyes and begging for them to adjust. Yet Chi wasn't sure if she was still dreaming as her vision focused on a head of a horse that had thrust his head into her new tent and was rummaging through her bag at the end of her bed-roll.

"Hey!" Chi exclaimed in her mother tongue as she snarled at the equine, "Get out of that!" the God's knew there things in there that could potentially kill the steed. Reaching out with her serkan magic, the bag suddenly escaped the horse's explorations and was in her hand within the next second. Tying the drawstrings together in a tight knot, she growled and forced the horse's head out with a blunt push from her hand. "What the hell is your horse doing doing loose anyways?" she growled loudly to the new tent next to her own after noticing many of the horse's footprints based out of that area.

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by Mistress-Inu Fri Dec 14, 2007 5:23 pm

A smile lit Vanity's white face as the horse's muzzle met her palm and fingers. Gently, she stroked the beast's nose, careful to barely brush her fingertips over its face as to not frighten him. "Mmh... That's quite interesting," she said, her voice low but loud enough for Mathias to hear. If she didn't know any better, she thought, he might be an angel himself. Vanity was always taught to love all things, horses no exception. Mathias's behavior could surely pass for an angel, as far as she knew.

That thought did not change even as Mathias offered her one of the furs he wore. As he held it out, Vanity blinked at it for a brief moment, then hesitantly reached out and carefully took it into her own hands. Heavy as it may be, she lifted it about her own shoulders with the simplicity of picking up a mere window curtain. Vanity's size and dainty form deceived people, without a doubt; she hid her true physical strength well. She smiled warmly up to Mathias as she settled into the fur, chuckling some pleasantly. Despite her unnoticeable shivers and the constant warmth of her skin, she could indeed feel a chill seeping into her clothes. "Thank you, sir," she said with a nod of her head. "The gesture is much appreciated." She thought for a moment: Surely, she would be repaying him for this at some point in the future, hopefully soon.

As Sachieal's voice broke through the night air, Vanity lifted her gaze up to him, her smile diminishing, though her expression was not unkind. More like curious. Her dark eyes swept over Sachieal's features again, only this time she had a better view. She could get his details printed clearly into her head. His blonde hair, marble skin, his eyes... A few moments to pass, and she forgot she was staring. Even if Vanity were to be aware of it, she would probably think she had a good reason to. Not only did he seem too striking to be a warrior, but...

He fits. Yet, I still can't be sure, not at the moment...

Vanity only broke from her trancelike state when both their voices rang into her ears. She turned her head just in time to watch Mathias return to his tent; she would have replied to his words had he not been in need of rest.

Gripping the furs he had lent her with her fingers tightly, yet with such careful gentleness, she turned her eyes back to Sachieal calmly. "The cold does not bother me much," she said honestly, with a small, assuring nod. "I am sure this isn't the worst I've encountered."

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by TaiKitsune Fri Dec 14, 2007 6:21 pm

The night before ended for Sachieal after the stranger had re-entered his tent. Oh, I like him, he's about as cocky as I am. Sachieal would not lie to himself of his faults, it is what made him a little less than angelic. The girl, who stood near the horse, and was the same one from the crowd that he noticed before.

"The cold does not bother me much, I am sure this isn't the worst I've encountered." Sachieal smiled and chuckled lightly, the girl was a strong one, good. "Well, madame', if you don't have a place to rest for the night, you may take my tent, I won't be using it." Yet another laugh escaped the demon. "I'm glad you decided to join my company, I'm sure you won't be dissapointed! Well, Miss, I bid you farewell." Sachieal bowed and turned to leave, to where he was going, he did not know. Something compelled him to wait, however. "Oh, and Miss, when we move out tomorrow, I'd like to speak to you. You may ride with me, if you wish, I'm sure my Pestilence wouldn't mind a lovely woman such as yourself along with boring old me!"

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Sachieal made sure to pay close attention to Odei's rune-making lesson. He took exact replicas down in one of his black, leatherbound tomes. The others in the troop would be notified and given the images to replicate on the journey. The morning was young, and the impending feeling of a hectic situation fell upon him.

With all these newcomers, Sachieal might not find the time to do much of anything. Sachieal thought to himself as he walked back to his tent, if the girl took his offer, he'd have to tread lightly. Pesitlence wouldn't cause her trouble, he was laying outside the tent itself when he last walked by.
Oh, the work to be done.

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by Mistress-Inu Fri Dec 14, 2007 11:57 pm

Vanity quirked a thin brow at him slightly, taken quite a bit by surprise of Sachieal's generosity. This wasn't really what she had expected from the description she had received of him. That confused her: If this was the Sachieal she was looking for, then was she being lied to? Was someone tricking her? Or was he the one deceiving her, just putting up a cover? Well, she wouldn't let that convince her into giving up. Luckily, patience was one of her better traits.

She blinked once at him, slowly, as if carefully taking in his words. She had to consider his offer in deep thought, really. To sleep in the tent of the man she was supposed to exterminate was irking. At least, that's what it felt like. Perhaps it was simply paranoia. He didn't know who she was, after all, and besides, she was the one hunting him, not the other way around. Well, the answer would come to her at last minute, she knew. It tended to do that.

Vanity gave a brief bow of her head, loose strands of her ebony hair falling from behind her shoulders and over her torso. "I am thoroughly obliged, Mister Sachieal. I will consider your offer, surely." Then, almost subconsciously, she presented him with a friendly smile as well. "I do look forward to accompanying you." She paused, her eyes sparking with an evident contemplative light. "As for tomorrow... I will speak to you then, most definitely."

Another handful of the night allowed Vanity the opportunity to sit and think to herself. Once many others had retreated to their tents, she picked a spot on the ground to sit, and after clearing a good portion of it of snow she let herself plop onto the moist dirt. As always, her pose was delicately well-refined, with a straight spine and her hands placed onto her knees. The pelt Mathias had handed to her earlier still draped over her small shoulders, and she was grateful for it more than she'd been before. The ground wasn't exactly a luxurious place to sit down on in the first place, not with weather like this, and the chills that were sent through her made it difficult to think, on top of all that. Still, Vanity could focus well enough more on her own mind than the freeze, even with the wind blowing icy air onto her warmed skin.

As she sat there, eyes closed and unmoving, Vanity couldn't help but wonder if she had come to the right place. Sachieal was... surprising, to say the least. She had been told of him enough to have her feeling that he needed to be wiped away from this earth, but as far as his personality went, he didn't fill those details. The behavior of a Hell-sent demon... But he has acted as anything but since I arrived. Vanity furrowed her brows slightly, her lips forming into a frustrated line. Of course she knew this wasn't going to be easy in the first place, but to encounter this? It was... not maddening, but close enough. Surely this couldn't be the Sachieal she was looking for.

But he suits the physical traits! It has to be him. He has to be hiding his true interior with all this kindness... Then again, Vanity felt she was wrong about that. He seemed sincere, honest... Normally she did well with telling if someone lied to her, but if he was doing just that, he did a very good job at it.

With a sigh of weariness and a little aggravation, Vanity let her shoulders sag and opened her eyes, gazing up into the sky that dropped bits of snow to the earth. "You made it sound easier than this..." she murmured, and then stood up, shaking her head and hugging the furry pelt around her closer. The cold had finally gotten to her, though her skin still felt unusually warm. Might as well turn in for the night; there were many more nights to come that she could think about this, as time progressed.

As she directed herself to Sachieal's tent (she was too tired to argue about that with herself any further), Vanity had only one last, scornful thought in her head:

Igh... Men.

*****

The internal clock within Vanity was what informed her that morning had arrived.

Vanity blinked drowsily, letting her eyes adjust to her surroundings. The world was sideways, from what she saw. There was the familiar sensation of lying down, on the ground. Her cheek was nestled into the soft furs from Mathias, with the rest of the pelt wrapped about her form. The comfort and warmth it gave practically made Vanity reluctant to wake, but her mind was quick to remind her she had duties to attend to. With a small grimace, the girl sighed and slowly sat up, hiding a yawn behind one hand before rising to her feet to stretch muscles.

Taking up Mathias's pelt with careful hands, Vanity dusted the dirt and flecks of snow from it, and then pulled it over her shoulders as she sat back down and took to combing out her hair with her fingers. Oddly, it worked, but only because her hair was sleek enough to easily handle. This normally took a while, due to how long it was, but also because she often became lost in thought while she neatened it. During that time she came to remember where she was, and she was surprised to see she was still alive.

Demon could have killed me if he had the chance. Vanity grimaced at her paranoia. She kept forgetting—Sachieal didn't even know her. What good would come of killing her?

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by Nick Sat Dec 15, 2007 1:37 am

Being a creature of habit as it were Histlan's eyes opened slowly, early in the morning. She let out a deep sigh that had in turn taken in a deep breath of the crisper air. Her tent served to keep the wind and other elements from her but it did not keep out all the cold, just made the air stiller and thus seemingly warmer. She turned on one shoulder more heavily and glanced upward, the darkness in the tent more than welcomed solely because she was accustomed to it. Often she'd taken to having a sleeping cycle in which she woke up earlier when it was still relatively dark. Most often taking a stroll when few were up to observe the glory before daybreak, and to watch dusk turn to dawn and bring her to those limitations once more. It was a small joy that had kept her going in her younger years despite it's bitter-sweetness. She smiled to herself; a genuinely contented one unlike many of the others she put on for the benefit of others and helping in communication. It stemmed from the memory of the view at her cliffside on the estate just before daybreak, from years prior.

She looked to the flawed seams of the tent, seeing the lighter sort of darkness seeping through, it wasn't the prime time for a stroll maybe a touch late but it was still manageable. Her smile was short lived though when she realised that despite the earliness there'd certainly be more people about then she'd normally encounter considering she was in the middle of a large encampment. With that she closed the book that had been splain open all night and pushed it a bit further off. If nothing else she could embelish herself with some extra sleep which would be highly useful before the start of their long journey. Journey for...what? She burrowed her face back into the entanglement of bedding. That among other things she would worry about when she got up, and it was easy enough to forget for the time being and fell back asleep.

It felt like only moments later that she awoke again, the brighter atmosphere of morning invading the canvas of her tent and she squinted her eyes as they tried in vain to focus. They always tried but never seemed to succeed. It was with the sun's looming presence that she would be back to darkness. In the privacy of her small tent though she got herself ready for the day without her face hidden. Packing up her things seemed too quick of work since once it was done she had no reason to lnger in solitude and privacy anymore. It brought about another sigh and she closed her marked eyes and tied the sash back around them before exitig her tent. Letting the cold air touch her face for a long moment before she pulled her hood back over the top of her head. The cool air always helped to wake her up.

The day was quick to start and before she knew it, one of the 'officials' had given her new weapons. A sword and a dagger, neither of which she particularily like but at the same time was quite intrigued by. They were intertwined with the sort of magic she adored, and a seemingly strong type of Lumerian arts at that. It eminated the feel of something she wanted to have with her and yet, at the same time it made her skin crawl and it was made obvious to her she coud not touch the blades' smooth surfaces despite her want to. At least not as it stood, for the time, with her bare hands.

She'd found somewhere to sit, at least for a brief time while she inspected the weight, balance and grip of the weapons before securing and adjusting the new straps and sheaths that now would be more things to carry with her. She learned what she could of the items in her own way while still being cautious of them. As it stood she seemed to have more weapons then she'd have expected now. Her pair of jutte, the three-section staff, now these blades and the ji halberd that had just recently come to replace her walking stick. They all served different purposes though and she felt unable to part with any of them. She broke from her thoughts though as she heard too clear murmurs of excitement around her.

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 3276
Odei walked between the men preparing for the journey, surveying their actions, Obi, now a crow, asleep on his shoulder and occasionally dangerously close to sliding off. Today the troops seemed far more organized than the day before. They were working hard and fast, the new officers and captains pulling their weights and doing their best, it seemed they were happy to be promoted to higher ranks and wanted to prove their worth. Odei was of course greeted with the same frowns and whispered curses as of the night before by the ex-commanders, who apparently did not quite lose their authorial positions despite odei’s demotion as Nemes did not want to lose their services and trust… but it was only a small matter of time before the new leaders’ efforts would shut them up. Meanwhile, it was evident that the Vorei was doing his best to gain Odei’s trust, allowing the man to act his role as simple captain. Odei did not care for this, nor tried to like Nemes, regardless of the man’s fairness. He never trusted men of power, as each one he had ever known, be it lumerian, umbrovian, high monk, high lord… they all proved sly in the end.

He would be careful not to push Nemes to the limits, though. Odei understood that they were using him, but did not need him to the extent that they would not lock him up again in an instant.

His eyes caught the blind woman, Histlan, not such a long distance from him as she inspected their new weapons… much to his amusement a frown on her lips, she did not like them much, obviously, but they were necessary for protection, and not for show. He stood still for a moment; Odei had come across countless faces in the past few days, but his thoughts returned time and again to this particular woman. He felt the dark aura about her, and was not sure of what it was he felt within her, what kind, but he did notice her withheld, inward manner, and how she carefully hid her hands and skin. This caught his eye because it reminded him of himself when he was first blessed with the ‘gift’ of the Surda, and how hard he had to try and hide the darkness growing about his arm. Until this day, out of habit, he still keeps that arm well gloved from sight.

He did not know her story, or if he was anywhere remotely close to assessing her reasons correctly, but he remembered his needs in those first years, where he wished for guidance, an answer, or hope. He might not be able to give her any of it, but he wished to show her that if she wanted to speak; he might be able to understand. He approached her, as she was turning the sword over, its black blade glistening in the morning sun. “I’m sure Sachieal has already explained that we cannot touch the blades. You will be better off using thicker, leather gloves than those, where the skin turns dark…” he said, indicating her hands with a node of his head. “Captain Taverus is in charge of the extra supplies… there might be a pair of the high gloves buried under the heap.”

"Good, Now add some more melkath... Yes, two leaves, just like that," Origin monitored the girl carefully as she pounded a simple spice mix pretending for all the world it was a dangerous potion.

Mathilda was sound asleep in the corner of the room, leaned back on her stool. No wonder the child had escaped so easily. By the age of the woman, she probably couldn't remember where she was at times, much less that of a wily young girl.

Leyla pounded away at the mixture with some determination, as Origin supervised until it was a fine powder. The older woman poured in a dollop of precious honey and began mixing the contents herself.

"Now then Little One," she said, carefully pouring the amber mixture back into a tiny vial of a similar looking liquid, and shook it around, "Whenever good Mathilda has a cough, give her just a sipful of this, and she will feel better. Give her too much and she will cough harder. Do you understand?"

Leyla nodded solemnly, placing the little bottle into her skirt pocket. Origin smiled and cleaned out her mortar and pestle, replacing it into her satchel.

As she closed the basket she lay back on her pillows. The exertion had made her hip feel worse, but she was not to rest long, for soon there was an urgent knock on the door. After a millisecond it flew wide open, startling Mathilda out of her slumber.

((Nemes))

“Mathilda… we were hoping you would keep our word and warn us of wherever it is you and little Leyla would be running off to…” Smiled the female captain, an Elvin-like woman, but nowhere near of Elvin blood. She laughed, for it was obvious that the woman was now too old to care properly for the little girl, particularly with the journey to come. She turned away, to look apprehensively and Nemes, now walking in behind her. They had talked about it, and thought that the old woman would not survive such a journey to come; they would end up needing to care far more for the nanny, than the child. She turned back, smile once again on her lips. “What have you been up to?” she said with a bright smile at the child.

Nemes came to stand before Origin, a shy, little boy also following him in and went quietly to where the captain and the Auran stood, curious to see the ‘potion’ that the girl had learnt to make. ‘Why, it’s you again…” Nemes smiled. “Leyla seems to have developed some sixth sense for finding you… I’ve never seen her go after someone so persistently before, in fact, she would not stop talking about the ‘snow’ girl of the day before all day today during her lessons...” Nemes laughed, and he spoke to Origin, a thought crossed his mind. His senses roamed the injured girl, flowing through her aura, studying it, as if it were a physical book he could pick up and read. He found a lot of pain and sadness, most probably born of a complicated past, yet the Aura was pure and free of malice… Origin was true and kind, but her specie worried him. The Elissette was one winged specie the Vorei were familiar with, and he was aware of their rather feral nature… would Origin be fit enought to take mathilda's place? it was hard to ask anyone to take up the job... after all Leyla would not accept it, unless if she adored the person, and that was a rare thing to see.

Origin peeped an eye open at the captain from her resting place among the pillows.

"I've been worse, but I do fear the medics will tie me down if i dare get out of this bed," she nodded towards the door, where a young and rather malevolent sentry was sitting patiently with a rope, lest she make a daring escape. She pushed up her nose at him and turned back to Nemes.

"But Leyla's been a good company. She's made a cough potion for Mathilda here," Leyla proudly held upthe vial, "And we were about to play Locks."

Chapter Two: The Auran. - Page 6 Empty Re: Chapter Two: The Auran.

Post by Nick Sat Dec 15, 2007 1:20 pm

Histlan straightened her back quickly as she heard the growingly familliar voice. Her chin lifted up to regard him as though she were looking to him, though it'd become no more than a habit of showing her attention. "Good morning, Captain." She started somewhat formally. She'd been a tad surprised, feeling as though she should have sensed his approach, but perhaps her attention had been too concentrated upon the new weapons. "Ah, no." She remarked to his comments, "I have not seen him yet this morning, but I'm sure that won't last much longer." She brought her hand over the blade, not touching but rather running it parallel about three inches above the blade, "I figured, however, I can feel the conflicting."

She pulled her hand back quickly enough after, not wanting to leave it linger there. '...where the skin turns dark'. Her lips parted in a silent surprise, that was twice he'd caught her off guard within moments of each other this morning. She was fairly certain he'd not seen her black hands, but in the end she could not be so sure. Maybe he could just feel it as she could. Either way it did not really matter at this point. Her lips pulled into a slight bit of a smirk in simple spite of herself. "And here I'd thought well of myself for keeping that covered." She said with an underlying sort of perhaps inappropriate humour. Standing once more she pulled forward the sword once more and sheathed it, then pulled at the leather straps a bit to ensure that it was secure where it sat on her hip.

Bringing her heed back to Odei, she brought her hands back up, one's palm facing upward as she rubbed it with the other's thumb. "If I were to have thicker gloves... I wouldn't be able to 'see' as well, as it were." She informed him, but lowered her chin as though to observe her hands in consideration.
